Serials & Other Continuing Resources (SCORE): Scholarly Communication in IFLA

What We Do

The Serials & Other Continuing Resources Section (SCORE) serves as IFLA’s home for scholarly communication. SCORE focuses on all aspects of the creation, dissemination, and preservation of research through programming, committee work, special projects, and collaboration with other IFLA units.

Challenges and opportunities in scholarly communication are abundant. The growing number of research publications, venues for disseminating research, as well as models for the dissemination of those outputs are breathtaking. The Section contributes to understanding and tracking of the changing scholarly communication landscape by:

  1. Sharing – a venue for thoughts, ideas and questions about scholarly communication
  2. Collecting- resources created or used by the community
  3. Promoting – solutions and best practices

Specific topics of interest to the Section include (but are not limited to):

  • Open access
  • Repositories
  • Publishing models
  • Altmetrics and other types of metrics
  • Text and data mining
  • Bibliographic standards and control
  • National and international library cooperation
  • Access and availability
  • Conservation and archiving
  • Collection management and development
  • Library publishing
  • Pricing issues
  • Copyright
  • Relationships with publishers, suppliers and other organizations
  • The accelerating impact of technological developments
  • Changes in continuing resource business practices and procedures

Projects & Events

The committee regularly revises its action plan, which provides direction for our Section. In recent years, the committee focused on open access, grey literature, serials and continuing resources standards, and metrics related to scholarly communication.

Each year the committee hosts at least one professional programme event at the World Library & Information Congress (WLIC) and every other year SCORE hosts a satellite conference.

The papers from these events can be found in the IFLA Library.

This unit is part of the Professional Division G.
